I feel that the Articles of the Confederation could not work because they did little to ease the congestion in the governmental process caused by everyday local grievances. When you allow for each individual territory to have ultimate authority within its bounds it seems to cause congestion in the progression of the governmental system.
I feel the old worn out analogy of the government as a finely tuned machine comes into play here because if one component of the system becomes congested, the progress of the system as a whole will be hindered. I do however strongly believe that local governments have a very legitimate say in their own living conditions and feel that they should be represented in any established form of government.
An example of one of James Madison’s solution to the fundamental problem associated with designing a Constitution that is to govern is the idea of a system of checks and balances among various governmental bodies. This prevented power from being centralized in a single body. I feel this was an important step in the foundation of our political structure because it prevents a single corrupted or concentrated element from bringing down the whole system.
An additional example of one of James Madison’s solutions would be the States power to check the federal government. This solution said that States have a legitimate right to be heard and to be represented. I feel this is also important because it allows the individual states to maintain a voice a among the entirety of the national governmental body.
Another one of James Madison’s solution’s broke the government into three separate but equal branches of government. These branches consist of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of government. I feel this is also an important step as it prevents power from being centralized in a single area of government making it vulnerable to corruption.
A final example of one of James Madison’s solutions to the fundamental problem associated with designing the Constitution would be his idea of vertical distribution of power which I feel prevents an overall gridlock among the government. It does this by setting a standard for all of the government to abide by, solving controversies that may arise in the future.
