While the concept of federalism can prove contentious, I feel that if the federal governments power were less than that of the states, the federal government would lose the ability to govern the various territories effectively. Since states vary greatly in both local laws and opinion, if the power of the federal government was limited by the states, I feel that the various states would not be able to be able to agree on a specific course of action due to the many varying viewpoints and opinions.
I do however feel it is important that the states remain empowered to govern their own territories in a manner that they see fit. The reason I feel its important that the states remain empowered is that I feel that Americans should have choice when it comes to what territory they choose to live in as well as what laws they choose to have enforced in their locale. If the federal government was given absolute power, I feel that the states would loose their individuality, instead becoming another cloned instance of similar federal locales.
I believe that currently the federal government oversteps its bounds when it comes to the uniformity in policy among the states. While I do believe that the federal government serves a purpose in this area, I feel that the use of federal money to fund only those states that choose to comply with the federal government breeds an atmosphere of conformity that not only limits the choice of political environment you choose to live in, it also gives those states that choose to follow the federal governments direction an additional economic boost that otherwise wouldn’t be.
I do feel however that the federal government should retain some power over governing the individual states but I feel that the federal government should take a more individualistic approach to solving individual problems among the states, rather than a single, cure all response that gets applied to the nation as a whole with extensive bureaucracy . I feel that if the federal government chose to govern in such a manner the states would be more willing and less skeptical when it comes to the effectiveness of federal guidance.
