While I feel that the values of equality and order are very important, I would not consider them more important than our individual right to freedom. Outside of acts of general harassment and what can already be classified federally as a hate crime, I feel one should have the freedom to make decisions based on personal opinion or bias a long as those decisions don’t directly affect the individual liberties and rights outlined in the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The reason I consider these values of freedom to be so important, is because these freedoms compose our individual right to free expression. These free expressions can have a direct effect on our situation or surroundings in both the short and long term.
One collective goods/action problem that I’ve come to identify in particular would be the local funding of the LVMPD. While the police force is tasked with serving an ever growing and diversifying population, they are not always allocated the funds and resources they request.
Some argue that the police force is funded well enough and that they should do a better job at managing the funding they currently receive. While some argue that they are tasked with the important job of public safety and additional funding should be established. One such funding example would be the recent attempted increase in enforcement of the state sales tax increase that’s to be used to fund LVMPD.
